Barrier Division of General Practice

The Barrier Division of General Practice (BDGP) is a not-for-profit organisation, funded primarily through the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aging. It's role is to support and advocate for the General Practitioners, and through the provision of education, information and services to enhance the role of the GP in the delivery of quality primary health care to it's communities. The hub is based in Broken Hill and the regional centre of outback NSW and the Division is so named because of the Barrier Ranges which surround the city. The Division was formed in 1995 and aimed to assist rural general practitioners in improving the standards of health care for people living in the region. Barrier Division encompasses the towns of Broken Hill, Tibooburra, White Cliffs, Wilcannia, Ivanhoe & Menindee. The area covered by the Division is approximately 120,000 square kilometers. The population within the Division boundaries is approximately 25,000, with 23 General Practitioners including & 7 Royal Flying Doctor Service doctors who serve a much broader area than that covered by the Barrier Division. Membership

Any General Practitioner living or working within the Barrier Division (Broken Hill, Tibooburra, Ivanhoe, Menindee, White Cliffs or Wilcannia) is eligible to join the Division as a Primary (or voting) Member. Any person wishing to support the aims and objectives of the Division including other non-GP Medical Practitioners, Allied Health Professionals or community members may join as an Associate (or non-voting) Member. Division members are invited to attend meetings and education sessions held by the Barrier Division.

Where is Our Office?

The Division is located in two converted cottages at 246 & 248 Oxide Street, Broken Hill.  The building at 246 Oxide Street houses the Regional Diabetes Centre which is run in conjunction with the Greater Western Area Health Service.  The building at 248 Oxide Street houses Division Management and Program staff and has a function room for educational sessions and meetings.

The Division office hours are between 9am – 5pm, Monday to Friday
